Sensenich offers a pickup and delivery service that covers the East Coast and into Texas at fees that range from 50 to 250. The props are generally shipped in large wooden crates at a cost that can top 600. The overhaul process (done right) is extensive and time consuming, as I found out during my visit. Unfortunately if you wait until there are problems, its too late for a basic repair, Landin said. It also works with WoodwardOntic, Dowty and Hamilton Standard governors.Īs youd expect, corrosion inside the hub is the enemy and as he noted, once a prop comes through his doors its often too late to salvage without doing a complete overhaul. Sensenich works with everything from fixed-pitch to turbo propellers (when we visited it had a huge supply of King Air props) from McCauley, Hartzell, Sensenich and composite MT-Propeller models. To unravel the mystery I spent some time at Sensenich Propeller Services in Georgia, one of the countrys oldest and highest-volume propeller shops. Sensenich Wood Propeller S Cracked Hub From.I just want to make it as much black-and-white as I can and then go from there. When he dressed the nick, he said "this might need to be sent to a prop shop" and "that means you might fall into the AD". My intention is to collect as much factual information as possible and lay it all out for the local A&P to interpret. The overhaul was back in '64 and he suggested that the engine ought to be torn down just for a corrosion inspection even though it was only 1200 SMOH. I told the FAA guy that my engine has been overhauled (thinking that eliminated Lycoming's relevance with respect to bolt torque) and he actually flipped that comment back in my face. The FAA said that this AD started because Lycoming had a bit of a problem with the torque on the crank gear retaining bolt and that left it eventually loose enough to put stress on the "locating pin". I enjoyed both that call and the one with the FAA engineer (imagine that!). It was interesting to talk to Sensenich's engineer too. The local A&P can take either side of this with respect to how poorly defined "minor dressing" is defined. In my case, the propeller was turning but the rpm did not drop, the propeller did not bend, the nick was small and was easily field-dressed. He said the loosey-goosey "minor dressing" is direct from Lycoming and that Lycoming refused to further define it. I called the FAA engineer and talked to him about it too. I'll have to follow-up with them again after I take the measurements. And unfortunately Lycoming requires the AD compliance on ANY prop contact - even grass stains!!!I told Sensenich that I had the M74DM and gave them my serial number. #SENSENICH PROPELLER SERIAL NUMBERS SERIES#Thanks - good info - However this is for the newer 74D series - most of our planes have the earlier M74D which is fully interchangeable but they have a much different profile (narrower blade) Sensenich can also provide the specs for the earlier props. ![]()
